Audi Ignition Coil Failure Symptoms

Although it isn’t common, the ignition coil in an Audi can fail due to wear and tear, moisture damage from fluid leaks, or worn-out spark plugs. The best way to ensure that your Audi is always running in top condition on the roads in and around Los Angeles is to keep up to date with scheduled maintenance and inspections. However, if you notice any of the following issues on your Culver City commute, it could indicate that there is a problem with your Audi ignition coil:

  • The vehicle is difficult to start

  • Engine misfires or stalls out

  • The check engine light is on

  • Backfiring

  • Rough idling or loss of power

  • Reduced fuel economy

Schedule service with the experts in the service center at Audi Beverly Hills as soon as possible if your Audi is experiencing any of the symptoms listed above. Our certified technicians have the skill and expertise to quickly diagnose the problem and get you safely back on West Hollywood roads with as little downtime as possible.

What is an Ignition Coil?

The ignition coil is a critical part of the ignition system in your Audi. Its primary function is to boost the low voltage supplied by the battery into the high voltage that the spark plugs need to ignite the air-fuel mixture in the combustion chambers in order to start the vehicle. In older engines, the ignition coil output is directed to the cylinders via a distributor, but most newer vehicles feature a coil-on-plug system (COS) in which each cylinder has its own dedicated ignition coil.

How to Test an Ignition Coil

An ignition coil can be tested with a multimeter, which is available at most auto parts stores. However, we strongly recommend that you have a professional test your ignition coil for you. It is extremely important to note that the ignition coil can generate up to 40,000 volts when in operation. This high voltage is very dangerous and life-threatening, so you absolutely must disconnect the ignition coil completely from the wiring before attempting to test it with a multimeter. If you have any doubts or reservations about doing this job on your own, you should bring your Audi to our service center. Our experienced technicians will employ the latest diagnostic tools to pinpoint exactly where the problem is and take the necessary steps to get your ignition system operating properly once again.
